Volunteer Opportunities

The International Alliance of Indigenous and Tribal Peoples of the Tropical Forests is looking for volunteers to assist them in the International Technical Secretariat of the Alliance , based in Chiang Mai , Thailand . The Alliance is a world-wide network of indigenous and tribal peoples organizations representing indigenous and tribal peoples in over 40 countries. The Alliance works on the principle of self-directed development, and aims to build the capacity of all member organizations in participating in and impacting on international processes of concern to indigenous and tribal peoples.

Who are we?

The International Technical Secretariat (ITS) is the central coordinating office of the Alliance with three working languages (English, Spanish and French). It is a dynamic and exciting environment in which to work, exposing staff to a range of international processes including the Convention of Biological Diversity (CBD), the United Nations Forum on Forests, the United Nations Framework Convention of Climate Change (UNFCCC), United Nations Pe rmanent Forum on Indigenous Issues (UNPFII), international policy bodies such as the World Bank and the Asian and African Development Banks and other fora impacting on indigenous peoples. The ITS coordinates Alliance work within such fora, and promotes the participation of indigenous leaders from over 40 countries in these meetings.

 

The ITS also coordinates communication with a range of funding agencies, seeking and managing funding for capacity building and training programs implemented in the regions, and directs the Alliance internship training program involving young indigenous leaders from throughout the Alliance membership.

What would you be doing?

This position offers an exciting opportunity to gain first hand experience of the international system as it involves and impacts on indigenous and tribal peoples. The Alliance works on a range of large and medium size projects aimed at strengthening the participation of indigenous peoples in international fora impacting on our communities and peoples. If successful, you would be asked to assist with multi-lingual communication, and provided the opportunity to gain experience on one of the Alliance 's major on-going projects. The Alliance encourages applicants with capacity in French and Spanish or Russian to apply. Daily duties include:

•  Assist in preparing the quarterly e-newsletters of the Alliance

•  Assist in proposal preparation and fundraising activities for the Secretariat and the Regions

•  Provide assistance, as requested, to the on-going projects of the Secretariat

•  Assist with translation of daily communication with the regional secretariats and members of the International Coordinating Committee (nine members, three languages)

•  Translation assistance in meetings may be required

•  Assist in website design and update

•  Other duties as negotiated according to the interests of the volunteer, and needs of the Secretariat

The position is non-renumerated, although a contribution towards living expenses will be provided to successful applicants.
